In December 2022, twenty-five board members and staff members of the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) came to Tzu Chi medical center and headquarters to learn about Tzu Chi’s medical mission and to foster a deeper mutual trust and growing partnerships.

After two years without in-person services, residents of Bakersfield, CA were thrilled to have Tzu Chi’s medical team visit their community. Many patients came to the free clinic in dire need of medical attention as on-site care had been halted due to the pandemic. The event was heavily trafficked, furthering the team’s mission to host more free clinics in the near future.

The pandemic halted in-person services for Tzu Chi Medical’s clinics, leaving underserved communities without the critical care they had grown to rely on. Though the team was able to send medications via mail and help in any way possible, the two-year stall was difficult to navigate. Residents in San Bernardino and Cupertino were grateful to be able to schedule appointments and visit the clinics for in-person care.

Tzu Chi Medical hosts a dental outreach in Las Vegas, Nevada in December 2021, using updated workflows and equipment to provide improved service for uninsured and underinsured patients.

As of October 29, 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines for children aged 5 through 11, offering millions of children and families a way to help protect themselves against the spread of COVID-19 — while also supporting communities, and paving the way toward regaining a greater sense of normalcy. With this, Tzu Chi Medical Foundation (TCMF) immediately began contacting school districts in Southern California. Soon, Mountain View School District in El Monte, CA, joined Valle Lindo School District in South El Monte, CA, in administering the vaccine to parents and students at the Valle Lindo School District Office and Madrid Middle School. The community vaccination event took place on November 19 and November 20, and a total of 334 doses were given.

With the eligibility of Pfizer booster shots expanding in the U.S. offering additional protection from COVID-19, Tzu Chi USA’s Seattle Service Center began collaborating with a local clinic, International Community Health Services (ICHS), to provide further vaccination services to the community.

On August 8, 2021, Tzu Chi Medical Association sponsored a joint event in Long Island, providing free community health check-ups. This special event marked the first Tzu Chi medical outreach event since March of 2020. Further care for community health was offered through a grocery distribution that same day.
